1. Research and articulate the history of typography:
A S S I G N M E N T 1 - RESEARCH ON THE HISTORY OF TYPOGRAPHY
In the year 2000, Gutenberg and his printing press were voted the most influential person and invention of the previous millennium. Why? Before Gutenberg's press, the written word was only available to the clergy and the rich. His invention greatly helped to create the middle class through the ability to educate the masses comparatively inexpensively.
Check out these two videos to find out what the Gutenberg press did and how it worked:

or you can search for your own. (Keywords like Typography, History, timeline, etc. will help you out)
Create an 8 slide PowerPoint in which you dedicate 2 slides to information on each of the following:
- History of typography (origins, fads, trends, computing type, computer typesetting)
- The role of typography in media (advertising, logo creation, identity, broadcasting, publishing, etc.)
- Evaluate types of typography in media forms (film, web site design, advertising, print, etc.)
- Compare and contrast historical examples of typography
Save your .PPT with an appropriate file name in your COM 1025 folder.
2. Articulate and demonstrate the anatomy of a letter:
A S S I G N M E N T 2 - ANATOMY OF A LETTER
Type is all around us. We see type everyday, on every item imaginable. But do you know what goes into making a font? Do you know that someone spends hours and hours designing fonts for specific purposes? In this assignment you will do some research, and label parts of a letter with the correct industry terms.
This video is a great place to start your research:

Identify the following terms in the file to the right. Create text boxes and lines/arrows to label each term. You can do this in Microsoft Word, or another program of your choice. Please feel free to use online references to help you label the letters appropriately.
Save the assignment in your COM1025 folder with an appropriate file name. |

A S S I G N M E N T 3 - DEMONSTRATING FONT TYPES
If you have ever used Microsoft Word or any computer program that allows you to edit type, you've probably noticed that you have many fonts to choose from. This assignment will have you comparing some typefaces, and researching their uses.
Download the .docx file to the right to work through for this assignment. Use that Word document to compile examples of the following fonts. You can do this either by typing the name in the font (when available in Word) or by inserting an example of the text from online (perhaps a .jpg file) when the font is not available. Next, you need to complete the rest of the table is as much detail as possible. As usual, you can gather this information using Google or another search engine of your choice. Save the assignment in your COM1025 folder with an appropriate file name. |

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of text:
A S S I G N M E N T 4 - TEXT SPACING
Research, describe and demonstrate the following items in a Word document or a PowerPoint:

4. Explore and create two or more page-layout structures:
A S S I G N M E N T 5 - FORMATS ASSIGNMENT
Use this website to help you complete this assignment. Don't be afraid to do your own research through Google as well.
Explain each of the following in a Word document:
For each, using Microsoft Word or Adobe InDesign, create an array (an example/a sample) for each. Each of the three will be a separate document containing an image and an explanation, demoing how each is set up and used, just as you see in the images in the website linked above. You must set up the columns and grids yourself, not by using pre-created templates. If you need help with this, use Help or online resources to set up these grids. The text can be school appropriate nonsense – I’m looking for the setup and not the content. (Just use a lorem ipsum generator - this one works well) For this assignment you will save multiple files to your COM 1025 Typography folder:

A S S I G N M E N T 6 - CREATION OF TWO FINAL PROJECTS
In total, for the Project portion of Assignment 6, you will create 2 finalized projects, each project being a finalized text product (like a brochure, an advertisement, etc.). These 2 projects are quite open-ended. You are to create authentic text-based final projects, and the content can be of your choice, provided it is school appropriate and is copyright free. These cannot include any pre-sets from any text editing program – in other words, you are creating from scratch, whether you use Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, InDesign, Illustrator, etc. You already know how to set up your columns and grids from previous assignments, so now is the time to use that knowledge. You also studied the impact of colour, etc. in COM 1005 - Visual Composition, so again, now is the time to demonstrate the usage of that knowledge. You must use two different programs for the two projects, so if you use Publisher for the one, you must use something else for the other. You may choose to explore:
Use the Help menu and online tutorials to help you with learning these different software programs for any skills you don’t already have. Again, trial and error and your own ability to research for tutorials will be a large part of your skills development for this course. Save the two separate assignments in your COM 1025 folder with appropriate file names. |
