A S S I G N M E N T 1 - THE ROLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY ON SOCIETY
Before you get started capturing your own images, it is important to understand some basic history of photography. It is also important that you understand how photography relates to society in various different ways. The two assignments that follow will help you gain an understanding of where photography came from, and how it has affected us.
------------- PART 1 -------------
Download the PDF file to the right. Read the first two pages, and then follow the directions to complete your answers on page 3.
Remember, for PDFs, you need to open them in Adobe Acrobat Reader (not your internet browser) in order for your work to be saved. Check with your teacher if you need clarification on this process. Save your part 1 PDF with an appropriate file name in your COM 1205 folder. |
|
------------- PART 2 -------------
Use the Word file to the right to complete this assignment
Use a good search engine (ex. Google) and / or your own experience to fill in the table. Include as many details as you can. You can provide thumbnails of example photos, or even hyperlinks to the photos that help you describe the importance of photography in each area of society. Photographs can provide proof of events. However, this is changing, as the ability to "Photoshop" realistically makes us often wonder if an image has been tampered with or if it’s still an original. Often we have a stronger emotional reaction to a picture than to mere words – hence the saying “A picture is worth a 1000 words.” For example, the graphic, terrible images of the Nazi concentration camps after their liberation in the 1940’s carry far more weight than simply saying “War is bad!. Save your part 2 Word Document with an appropriate file name in your COM 1205 folder. |
An example of photography helping society: In this video, a research creates an algorithm to apply to her under water photographs to 'delete' the ocean and create more realistic visuals of reefs and aquatic life:

------------- PART 1 -------------
Your goal for Part 1 is to develop a cheat sheet of information you will use to complete Part 2 of this assignment. This cheat sheet will also become a valuable resource for you to reference and use as you work through your variety of photography projects for this module. Download the cheat sheet template below:
A2 - Part 1 - Photography Composition Techniques Cheat Sheet |
There are ten different composition techniques and concepts on your cheat sheet. Read through and spend time thinking about the visual examples present in the following PowerPoint presentations. You will be looking at lots of images and getting lots of suggestions on what works well and what doesn’t work as well, given certain situations. The more detailed notes you take about the ten different techniques and concepts, the more prepared you will be to take your photos.
Do not just copy and paste information from the PowerPoints into your cheat sheet. This will not help you learn.
